Guided Walk: Tintern Quarry, Tidenham, Forest of Dean

Saturday 29th May 2010

11.00 am - 1.00pm
[Location: NP16 7JW / ST 552 984]

Tintern Quarry is the deepest quarry in the Forest of Dean, exposing over 100m thickness of Lower Dolomite, Crease Limestone, Whitehead Limestone and Drybrook Sandstone.

Luckily, you don't have to be a mountain goat to reach these rocks as a forest path around the quarry provides safe and accessible exposures of these rocks, which inlcude large dolomite crystals, fossil soils, various sedimentary structures and fossils including some stunning trace fossils.

Bring sandwiches for a mid way lunch break and enjoy a secret view of the River Wye. An event for all the family, but steep drops mean that children must be under close supervision at all times.

Directions:
Heading north on the B4228 from Chepstow, take the unmarked lane on the left, 100m before Miss Grace's Lane. Continue to the end where you will find the entrance to the quarry.
